ToyCar joins family -- Tata Tiago XZA ( Petrol, with AMT)

Sachin,
I drove Tiago AMT over weekend. One of the observation is that toggle between AMT and Manual is not quick. For some reason, when I put it in Manual, the vehicle did not move as expected, not sure it received the right signal.

Yes, any change in Gearshift pattern in AMTs is slow. The response time is abnormally high for anyone used to driving since years.

You will notice it not only in changing from from Auto to Manual, but also from Auto/Manual to Reverse as well.

IMO, AMT tech is good only for people who are new to cars.

[Edit:]
While toggling between Auto and Manual, the gear number might change up/down depending on your speed and torque requirement. It may or may not be as per 'your expectation'. :)

Yo!
ToyCar didn't disappointed on its maiden long journey. I was contemplating between Shimla/Nainital/Lansdowne, and finally chosen Lansdowne to test the car's ability to tackle rough roads, narrow stretches, steep inclines and sharp descents.
Since it's an AMT, and a first for me too, I was a bit worried. But it does handled everything thrown at it with aplomb.

I cruised at 120-ish speeds for considerable time and it never felt out of power. It touched 140 very easily with its 3-pot engine making a nice sound.

Also met with an accident (while doing considerably slower speeds we were doing earlier), where God and ABS together worked to bring us and the other party out of it without any major harm.

A cyclist jumped on the smooth highway from a cut in median, where a motorcyclist was waiting for me to cross first. But as destiny had it for him, he (bicyclist) continued to cross the road pedaling his ride a bit faster. But a 1+ ton car doing some 80-ish speed is not easy to stop. I jumped on the wider pedal with my full weight and force, and it vibrated with its full vigor and I managed to turn the car right-side, towards the cut in median as bicyclist was going from my right to left.
Car shed its speed perfectly and hit him on his rear wheel with my car's front left end. Somehow reflexes helped me in pulling the hand brake at the very last moment and it skidded its rear wheels a bit to turn it slightly more to its right. It stopped right adjacent to the motorcyclist who was waiting calmly for us to cross first.
Bicyclist fell down on road without any injury, but his luggage (a loaded plastic crate) fell down on my car's bonnet and made a good dent. Bumper had few scratches as well. BUT, nothing happened to human life. Neither to us, nor to bicyclist or motorcyclist. Public gathered and fortunately everyone started shouting at the bicyclist (!!). I took the deepest breath of my life and felt 'actually' relaxed for the first time :)D), and ran to help him up on his feet, made him sit on the divider and moved out quickly on suggestion of few senior-aged persons in the crowd.
After that, it was a super-cautious drive to-fro and we forgot about it for the rest of journey. :)

Lesson learnt:
Any another car coming into my family will be having ABS+EBD and Airbags for sure.
Feeling good to opt for this tiny li'l car with all safety features available in this segment.
Thank you God, without your help we would have not came out of that incident unscathed.

Good to note that there was no injury to anybody, though the car can be repaired in Zero Dep.

The cyclist should have been taught a good lesson there itself, but given that you are driving in India and in a bigger vehicle, all blame would have come on your head even without your fault.

By the way, I took TD of AMT last to last week. I found the car making racing car type acceleration noise in gear shifting and the steering wheel dia is small and covers the dash board instrument panel. I mean I could not see the indicator lights in the panel due to steering covering it, very strange.

Cheers

I am not going to get it repaired immediately. Will attend to it after festivals. Another long journey to Rajasthan is coming up. That would be a high-speed journey I guess! ;)

I was carrying 'stuff' which could have easily came handy, but chose not to use it as you're right, in India our herd mentality doesn't take time to take a detour and get against its initial flow! :D A dashcam capture of this incident would have been perfect to share on social media, or among us. ;)

Steering can be adjusted up and down to a good extent. Driver's seat can be adjusted for height as well. How tall are you?
I am 6' and keeps the steering to its max up, and seat to couple of notches above the max down position. I think I see all the lights clearly. Acceleration noise is what I dislike most from this 3-pot engine.

Another update, regarding the performance of AC and FE...

There are lot of negative feedbacks for Tiago's AC. I managed to find a cure of it. It's slightly irritating to many, but I have moulded myself to adjust according to car.

In its AMT variant, there are 2 driving modes i.e., City and Sports apart from the manual mode.

AC works normally only in Sports or manual modes. In City mode, it performs well only if the car is being driven sanely in 5th gear for a long duration (which is next to impossible given our city traffic conditions). IMO, it is being done purposefully to increase the Fuel Efficiency significantly at a cost of passenger comfort.

I was driving it smoothly on highways at 100+ speeds and AC was performing well, like any other car. MID was showing an FE of 16.9KMPL as well.
Once in hills, FE came down to 14.5KMPL, and then touched a low of 12.9KMPL after negotiating the steep incline of Kaleshwar temple.

I am happy.

News News:

So 2 weeks back I ended up buying a Pre-Owned 2015 Zest XMA diesel 90.
That makes it my 2nd Tata so far and 2nd AMT car in the house. And makes 1 more AMT on this forum :)

I have a lot to speak about this Fab car but for that I will have to find time to write all that up in a thread.

Sorry for hijacking your thread Sachin :)

*Update*

2nd free service done
No charges

Good thing is that they replaced the complete Air Filter assembly part FOC on their own. When I asked they said it's due to a change in design of AMT Tiago's part. They are replacing it on all AMT Tiagos coming to them.
They also replaced both brake pads FOC as they were throwing lot of dust since very first day. They again are changing it FOC on new Tiagos coming to them.

So far it feels good to see them treating you fine! Only grudges are the small niggling problems in car and their pathetic Customer Waiting Lounges.

Congrats Jeet with your new Zest XMA Diesel.
Look forward to have a ownership feedback. How many kms has the car clocked?
