I guess the allocation of seats while booking online is mostly random(please correct me). Once when i booked in 12081 Trivandrum-Calicut Jan Shatabdi from Quilon to Ernakulam choosing a window seat, i got an aisle side seat  and this was when 1000+ seats were available...
It is random, but the berth options chosen will be taken into consideration.

But at reservation counter, I think the ticket booking clerk can book according to preference (I stand corrected). I am saying so because when ever my dad booked tickets at counter, he used to request the booking clerk to book the berths in the center of the coach (to avoid toilet stink), and every time we got berths in center of the coach. And we used to book for Godavari and Gowthami express trains, which are quite busy trains connecting Hyderabad with coastal AP.

during trip to Dudhsagar (Goa) on 22nd October'12..
I traveled first time in unreserved coach and it was like a fun! though my trip was so so short but it was completely entertaining.;)
Awesome clicks Raj!

I never dare to travel in general coaches but had experienced it around 5 to 6 time. As you said its entertaining - you have everyone there, right from vendors, beggars to seat sellers.

booking separately for ladies fine..(can even shell out rs 10[irctc charges per ticket] for preffered berth)..but what is the probability that I get the subseqent booking in the same bogie itself atleast if not for consecutive seats...
Getting subsequent booking on the same coach is a kind of lottery. Visiting the PRS is the best option in that case, or else board the train, and can request some good hearts. :)

Rajrover...no more travels ....expecting some good pics from Ur train journey...I love Ur pics man...pics shows more inputs than words most of times (IMO)

Anyone aware of this?

A few years ago, I came across an article in a newspaper which was basically from the memories of a southern railway engineer or chief manager. The gist of the article was as follows

"The present day BG line between Tiruchirapalli (Trichy) and Karur, during its conversion from MG to BG, was shut for traffic for mere 12 - 14 hours!!!!!! i.e, the duration between the last MG train and the first BG line was only 12 - 14 hours!!!!!"

To me this piece of info was stunning and truly unbelievable. I have spend hours and hours online, but could not get the original article. Is anyone aware of this piece of info or article? I am still in quest of this article.

Hmm, I guess the BG line was build over the MG line, utilizing one of the existing rail. You know, when completed it would look like 3 rails in parallel. This way they would minimize operational deficiency during the guage conversion process. And once BG conversion was done and BG trains start running, they can remove the 'middle' line whenever they want. I guess this would be the method used in the said Trichy - Karur section, for so short a turnaround time! I have seen a similar setup (3 parallel lines) in the line running from Palakkad Junction to Palakkad Town railway station -- where both BG and MG trains used to run on the same rail alignment.
