Travel from Delhi to Joshimath and back

Hello everyone,

I am travelling to valley of flowers in August and want to know the options for travelling from Delhi to Joshimath.

1. Is there a private bus from Delhi to Joshimath or Ghangaria.
2. Is there a private bus from dehradun to Joshimath or the only bus option is the one from utc state transport leaving at 5 am.
3. Will I get some transport in the evening to travel from Joshimath to Ghangaria.
4. I couldn't find the bus details from Joshimath back to dehradun on the govt site

Don't know about Bus from Delhi to Joshimath
Better take night bus from Delhi to Rishikesh.
From Rishikesh ISBT, you can get bus / Shared Taxi for Joshimath or ahead to Badrinath ji.
From Joshimath to Govindghat you can get Bus / shared taxi easily.
If you reach late at Joshimath at night, better stay there.
You can get early morning Shared Taxi to Govindghat.

From Govindghat there are shared taxis available till Pulna Village.
Then start trek till Ghangharia / Govind Dham.
You can start trek of 13km from Govind Ghat to Ghangharia / Govind Dham.

This will take your 1 Day easily.

2. Is there a private bus from dehradun to Joshimath or the only bus option is the one from utc state transport leaving at 5 am.

Rishikesh is right place to be.
Better avoid Dehradoon.
Dehradoon is out of the way.
All buses from any side go via Rishikesh only.
Stay at Rishikesh for night and start early in morning from Rishikesh Bus Stand.

3. Will I get some transport in the evening to travel from Joshimath to Ghangaria.

Till evening in daylight, you can get some shared taxi.
If late at night, stay at Joshimath. Start next morning.

4. I couldn't find the bus details from Joshimath back to dehradun on the govt site

Don't worry.
Take Shared Taxi / bus from Govindghat to Joshimath.
You may get many buses / Shared Taxi for Rishikesh from Joshimath.

Thanks a lot mate for the detailed reply. Have some follow up questions..

1. Will I get some share taxi or bus from Rishikesh till devprayag at around 4 pm..I have a morning flight to Delhi. So will be reaching Rishikesh around 4 pm. Want to do do so that I can save some time and also not have a hectic long journey.

2. If I do so will I get a early morning taxi from devprayag to Joshimath. Thinking to so as to reach Ghangaria the same day..I want to do so as I have 6 days from ex- Delhi.

3 . Any suggested stay option in Ghangaria..

Goto Rishikesh Bus Stand and try for Govt / Private Bus and Shared Taxi also.
Chance is very less for evening Buses.
You can get Shared Taxi till Rudraprayag most probably.
It all depends on the No. of passengers available at that time for Shared Taxi.
Or Hire own Taxi till Rudraprayag.
It will get dark when you reach Rudraprayag.
Stay at Rudraprayag as it has many Hotels / Guest Houses etc..

These are 6 main cities between Rishikesh & Govind Ghat where you can go easily :
Rishikesh
Devprayag (Less Stay and Food Options)
Srinagar (Good Stay and Food Options)
Rudraprayag (All Basic Infrastructure available)
Chamoli
(Less Stay and Food Options)
Karanprayag (Less Stay and Food Options)
Joshimath (All Basic Infrastructure available)
Govind Ghat (Stay & Food Options available)

Rudraprayag has all basic infrastructure and has much more options than any of other places.
Rudraprayag is Center Point on this route to move any side in UK for Travelers.
Many Shared Taxis start and end here because there is a way towards Kedarnath Ji.
Rishikesh to Rudraprayag is main route of Shared Taxis.

2. If I do so will I get a early morning taxi from devprayag to Joshimath. Thinking to so as to reach Ghangaria the same day..I want to do so as I have 6 days from ex- Delhi.

It can be easily done in 5 days, 6 days are good to keep extra time in hand.

Day 1 : Land at Delhi.
Take Airport Metro to New Delhi Railway Station.
Goto ISBT KAshmere Gate on Metro / Bus.
Take Bus for Rishikesh.
You will reach in evening.
If nothing is available to move ahead, stay at a hotel opposite to Rihiskesh Bus Stand.

Day 2 : 10 hours approx.
Take next day early morning Bus / Shared Taxi to Govind Ghat.
Joshimath has many options of Shared Taxis to Govind Ghat / Badrinath Ji.
You will reach in evening at Govind Ghat easily.
Stay here.

Day 3 : 8-10 hours approx
Start early morning trek to Ghangharia / Govind Dham (13km approx).
You can take Shared Taxi till Pulna village (3km).
Start Trek from there.
You can hire Pony also to reach earlier.

Day 4 : 8-10 hours approx
Goto Valley of Flowers.
(You can get down till Pulna Village if your speed is good on return leg.)
or
You can take Pony also for return. It will take 3.30 - 4 hours approx

Day 5 : 6-8 hours approx
Get down to Govind Ghat.
Take shared Taxi to Joshimath (1 hour) / Rudraprayag (6 hours) / Rishikesh (10 hours, if available).
(It depends on your speed to get down to Govind Ghat to return fast)

Day 6 : 6-7 hours
Take Bus / Shared Taxi to Rishikesh. Take Bus to Delhi ISBT.

Return leg is much easier, depending upon your speed to return.

3 . Any suggested stay option in Ghangharia / Govind Dham .

Many Hotels are there. No problem for stay options.
GMVN Huts are also there but much costly.
Electricity supply cuts after 10pm as it is on Generators.
Mobile only works is of BSNL.

August is month of Rains and can if it rains, it can lead to landslides at places.
You can stuck in landslide for unknown time.
Keep 2-3 hours extra from Rishikesh to Govind Ghat.
If landslide occurs between Govind Ghat & Ghangharia / Govind Dham then it will be difficult to get accommodation.
As back log of people start to increase and accommodation is not available.
Get one immediately once you reach there.

Take cash from Rishikesh only as ATMs can work till Joshimath only.
Time mentioned is approximate times for normal routine only.
Jam / Landslides etc can do delay accordingly.

Thanks a lot dear.

I will surely follow the itenerary you gave.

I am just giving some thought whether I should hire a private car. I have got the quote for ex-Rishikesh for 5 days. They are charging 14000. Does that sound right.

Is it better to book the bus tickets in advance
